Mobile Workshop: Brewing Brownfields Back to Life

Bus leaves from The Sands lobby at 1:30pm, returns at 4:30pm

The Lehigh Valley has many successful brownfields redevelopments, and a surprising number are populated with breweries, distilleries, and meaderies.  Join us for a special visit to one of these venues:   the former Easton Silk Mill.  Now known as The Silk, this property has been redeveloped from a 19th century silk mill complex into a mixed-use venue with apartments, artists’ studios, and other commercial spaces, including two beer makers.  The Separatist Blendary is granting us special access to view their rustic brewing methods, which incorporate koelschip and a foudre and barrel program.  This location normally doesn’t serve beverages (it’s their blending and fermenting location), but if we are lucky they will be able to provide us with a tasting of their specialty beers.  Just steps away, we will also visit the Böser Geist Brewing Co.  This is a full service brewery with lots of selections on tap.  If you think you’ll want to try something, bring your wallet – we can get you there and back, but we can’t buy you a drink!

Mobile Workshop: Big Machines, Big Industry

Walking Tour starts at National Museum of Industrial History at 1:45pm, ends at The Sands at 4:30pm

Find out more about the industrial history of the Lehigh Valley by joining this walking tour close to the conference venue!  The tour will start at the National Museum of Industrial History, located approximately 0.75 miles from The Sands Casino (a 15-minute walk, or a 4-minute ride if you choose to drive).  The museum will provide a short presentation about the Lehigh Valley’s history of industry – primarily steel and silk – before setting us loose in the museum to see their amazing collection of steam engines, steel-making equipment, silk looms, and more.  After about an hour at the museum, we will wander back towards The Sands, stopping at the Steel Stacks for a short film about the Hoover Mason Trestle, which was formerly part of the Bethlehem Steel plant. After the film, we will continue walking back to The Sands along the award-winning Hoover Mason Trestle walkway, an elevated walkway constructed along trestle and blast furnaces.  Signage along the way will help explain the history behind the structures you are seeing.  The walk will end up back at The Sands at 4:30pm, allowing you time to get to the reception at Steel Stacks at 5:00pm.
