Steel is teaming up with Grounded Strategies to raise funds for Grounded’s efforts to revitalize vacant land in Braddock\, Pa.\, and transform it into vibrant\, productive community spaces.  To support these efforts\, U. S. Steel is offering a tour of its historic Braddock steelmaking facility – the Edgar Thomson Plant – as a prize in a Grounded Strategies’ fundraising raffle. One hundred percent of the raffle proceeds benefit Grounded Strategies and their work in Braddock. Learn more about Grounded and their work here. \nWinners will receive: \n\nA package of two or four tickets for a tour of U. S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson Plant on Friday\, October 12\, 2018.  Tour will last approximately three hours and will include a drive-by viewing of the plant’s blast furnace operations\, walking tours inside the plant’s steelmaking facilities (basic oxygen furnace and continuous caster)\, and a brief question-and-answer session.\n\nAll tour participants must be 21 years of age or older and have valid government-issued photo identification to present on the day of the tour.  The tour will involve a fair amount of walking and stair climbing in locations where elevators are not available. Tour participants will also be visiting working areas where air temperatures will be well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  All safety equipment will be provided by U. S. Steel. Sell’Sola\, Crawford’s Expert Services Group \nOwners today are increasingly committed to ensuring that facilities will provide the lowest overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) while meeting capital budgets and addressing scope\, goals and objectives. \nLife-cycle costing (LCC) is the method used to ascertain and demonstrate the life cycle cost performance of facilities. LCC considers all significant costs of acquiring\, owning\, and using a facility over its projected effective useful life. \nDuring design\, alternatives need to be selected to reflect differing performance of systems relative to their functional requirements\, useful life\, required maintenance and energy consumption\, all in order identify the most effective choice. Commissioning through construction is essential. \nDuring operations\, information is passed through from design and construction\, often through Building Information Modeling (BIM)\, and updated on older facilities from Facility Condition Assessments. Maintenance and replacements should be planned and targeted to achieve effective and dependable use of facilities. \nTCO has application over the entire life of a facility. \nPresentation Objectives \n\nUnderstand industry direction for TCO.\nResponding to owner’s needs for lifecycle performance of facilities.\nUsing Lifecycle Costing (LCC) to manage the costs of acquiring\, owning\, and using facility over its useful life.\nDeveloping and using an overall TCO model to serve as a benchmark for the facility.\nHow to implement TCO during planning\, design\, construction and operations.\nHow do professional estimators and engineers fit in?\n\nMichael D. Dell’Isola\, PE\, CVS\, FRICS \nMike\, the head of Crawford’s Expert Services Group\, has over 40 years’ experience in the construction industry and is an internationally recognized facilitator\, speaker and author on cost\, value\, construction economics and project delivery. \nHe is one of the industry’s pioneers in life cycle costing (LCC) having contributed to the development of LCC standards for NAVFAC\, the US Army Corps of Engineers\, NASA and GSA and has provided training and education in LCC since the 1980’s. \nHe is co-author of the section on “Life Cycle Costing” in the AIA’s Handbook of Professional practice. DESCRIPTION:The 2018-2019 Future City Competition Theme is – Powering the Future! \nFuture City starts with a question—how can we make the world a better place? To answer it\, 6th\, 7th\, and 8th grade students imagine\, research\, design\, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. Each city must incorporate a solution to a design challenge that changes each year.  Past topics include stormwater management\, urban agriculture\, and green energy. The 2018-2019 challenge will be announced in July. \nStudents present their solutions via a virtual city design (using SimCity); a 1\,500-word city essay; a scale model; a project plan\, and a presentation to judges at Regional Competitions in January. Winners will represent Pittsburgh at the National Finals in Washington\, DC in February. After the competition is over\, student participants are not only prepared to be citizens of today’s complex and technical world\, they are poised to become the drivers of tomorrow. DESCRIPTION:Design Lives Here is a semester-long engineering initiative that equips teachers and students to participate in engineering activities within their school or afterschool program. Professional engineers serve as mentors to students throughout the year. Schools who participate are diverse – public\, parochial and private – and have the option of making this part of their school day or an extended program. Each spring\, all the participants come together for a day of engineering challenges\, grouped in new teams to compete for prizes.
