DESCRIPTION:Future City Pittsburgh Judges and Volunteers Needed \nThe Future City Competition is a national\, project-based learning experience where students in 6th\, 7th\, and 8th grade imagine\, design and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity Software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at the Pittsburgh Regional Competition on Saturday\, January 20\, 2018 at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Regional winners will represent Pittsburgh at the National Finals in Washington\, DC in February. \nThe Pittsburgh community has supported this event for 19 years.  The competition’s continued growth is a testimony to the program’s unique capacity to challenge students to learn and test new concepts related to engineering and city planning\, to apply the mathematics and science they have already learned\, to explore their imaginations about what our Cities will be like in the future\, and to build an example of the result using ingenuity and their own hands.  It has proven to be an excellent introduction of the engineering profession to middle school students. \nThis year’s challenge: The Age-Friendly City. Teams must include two innovation solutions that allow their future city’s senior citizens to be as active\, independent\, and engaged as they want to be. \nWe invite you to volunteer for this year’s Pittsburgh Future City Competition. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer for Design Lives Here!\nThis middle school program is done in partnership with WQED Multimedia\, and is modeled after the television show “Design Squad\,” which airs on WQED on Sunday evenings\, check it out: http://pbskids.org/designsquad/. Students perform design challenges as part of the STEM curriculum during the school day (or sometimes after the school day). We are in need of engineer mentors to help mentor schools participating in the program. The role of the engineer mentor is to advise the students on the “Design Lives Here” projects they are working on during the day.  In addition to the team coaching aspects of the mentor’s role\, this is a great opportunity to interact with middle school students who are showing an interest in a future engineering path. DESCRIPTION:U. S. Steel is teaming up with Grounded Strategies to raise funds for Grounded’s efforts to revitalize vacant land in Braddock\, Pa.\, and transform it into vibrant\, productive community spaces.  To support these efforts\, U. S. Steel is offering a tour of its historic Braddock steelmaking facility – the Edgar Thomson Plant – as a prize in a Grounded Strategies’ fundraising raffle. One hundred percent of the raffle proceeds benefit Grounded Strategies and their work in Braddock. Learn more about Grounded and their work here. \nWinners will receive: \n\nA package of two or four tickets for a tour of U. S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson Plant on Friday\, October 12\, 2018.  Tour will last approximately three hours and will include a drive-by viewing of the plant’s blast furnace operations\, walking tours inside the plant’s steelmaking facilities (basic oxygen furnace and continuous caster)\, and a brief question-and-answer session.\n\nAll tour participants must be 21 years of age or older and have valid government-issued photo identification to present on the day of the tour.  The tour will involve a fair amount of walking and stair climbing in locations where elevators are not available. Tour participants will also be visiting working areas where air temperatures will be well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  All safety equipment will be provided by U. S. Steel.
