Future City Pittsburgh Judges and Volunteers Needed
The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCity Software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at the Pittsburgh Regional Competition on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Regional winners will represent Pittsburgh at the National Finals in Washington, DC in February.
The Pittsburgh community has supported this event for 19 years. The competition’s continued growth is a testimony to the program’s unique capacity to challenge students to learn and test new concepts related to engineering and city planning, to apply the mathematics and science they have already learned, to explore their imaginations about what our Cities will be like in the future, and to build an example of the result using ingenuity and their own hands. It has proven to be an excellent introduction of the engineering profession to middle school students.
This year’s challenge: The Age-Friendly City. Teams must include two innovation solutions that allow their future city’s senior citizens to be as active, independent, and engaged as they want to be.
We invite you to volunteer for this year’s Pittsburgh Future City Competition. Event day roles of Registrars, Model Movers, Room Manager/Timers, Score Keepers, Special Awards Judges, Presentation Judges, Exhibit Area Control Volunteers, etc.
