In this session Fatma Ciloglu, Ph.D., P.E, Geotechnical Department Manager, will present the Landslide Best Practices Handbook written to produce region-specific guidance for practicing geotechnical engineers and geologists who are engaged to mitigate adverse impacts from an active landslide or reduce the risk of landslide movement for infrastructure. Best practice guidelines for the life cycle of a landslide mitigation response including approach, characterization, assessment and mitigation are presented. The Handbook was commissioned by the Impactful Resilient Infrastructure and Engineering (IRISE) consortium that is being led by the University of Pittsburgh and member panelists from FHWA, PennDOT Central Office and several Districts, PA Turnpike Commission, Allegheny County, and Duquesne Light Company.

About the Speaker

Dr. Ciloglu is a Geotechnical Department Manager for Michael Baker International, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA. She is responsible for raising the visibility of our geotechnical expertise within the Company and for expanding opportunities to grow business in this field.

Dr. Ciloglu is an experienced geotechnical engineer with expertise in the design and management of geotechnical projects for energy, transportation, government and private clients. She has served as the technical lead for various design projects and has managed engineering teams to deliver projects aligned with industry quality standards. Areas of expertise include geotechnical earthquake engineering, seismic response analysis of dams and embankment, landslide remediation, deep/shallow foundation analysis and design, landfill design, slope stability analysis and geotechnical subsurface exploration.

Dr. Ciloglu earned her Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Drexel University and her M.S. and B.S. degrees, both in Civil Engineering, from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.
