ARCH2’s Hydrogen Hub
The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub, or ARCH2, is part of the $8 billion hydrogen hub program funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy. The H2Hubs will form the foundation of a national clean hydrogen network that will contribute substantially to decarbonizing hard to abate sectors. The ARCH2 hub’s location is centered in the Marcellus Shale Region in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, in the nation’s second-largest gas-producing region. ARCH2 projects will integrate clean hydrogen production and end-use with connective infrastructure as the foundation for a clean hydrogen network in Appalachia and to attract additional opportunity and investment to the region.
The historic investment in clean energy in the Region will reduce our carbon emissions while driving innovation, economic development, labor skills, and quality job creation. The ARCH2 region has been disproportionately impacted by the decline of the coal industry over the decades and the cyclical nature of the natural gas industry. ARCH2 projects and infrastructure will provide a stable new industry as part of the clean hydrogen economy. At its peak, ARCH2 is expected to create more than 21,000 family-sustaining jobs, building local capacity and job skills.
