ESWP Scholarship News
Congratulations to the recipients of the ESWP Members Scholarship for 2023-24!
The recipients are:
- Sara Sawford (Sean Sawford- father) – awarded $2500,
- Paige Lanning (Jen Lanning– mother) – awarded $1600, and
- Austin Zeigler (Bill Laughlin – grandfather) – awarded $1600.
2023 ESWP Members Scholarship
We are now accepting applications for the 2023 ESWP Members Scholarship.
The Scholarship is open to the spouse, children, or grandchildren (natural, step, adopted, or ward) of a member in good standing (one or more previous, continuous years) of the ESWP – please note that only the individuals listed on a corporate member firm roster are eligible).
The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding high school seniors or currently enrolled college undergraduate students, preparing for a career in engineering, architecture or applied sciences. The students must be accepted in an eligible, full-time course of study, at an accredited college or university. The awards will be made without regard to financial need.
Completed application forms are to be submitted to the ESWP Scholarship Committee, no later than July 31, 2023. Please email eswp@eswp.com to receive an online application.

ESWP Member Reis Zandier from ACAA presented to students at Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh regarding her educational and career background in Engineering. Her feedback was the students showed a great deal of interest, asking a ton of questions, which is awesome!

ESWP’s Engineering Career Fair
ESWP’s Annual Engineering Career Fair was held on Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania.
28 companies participated in greeting over 100 students from the tri-state area, providing a rare opportunity for students and professionals to meet employers and company representatives. Students also took advantage of the mock interviews, an opportunity for students and professionals to interact and get quick feedback on their resume and interview skills.
Thank you to all the companies and students who participated.
Future City Competition Results
The 20th Pittsburgh Regional Future City Competition was held on January 19, 2019 at the Carnegie Science Center in the brand new PPG Science Pavilion.

The announcement of the first of 4 Distinguished Alumni for 2019 has been released on Facebook today. The awardee is Brandon D’Aloiso who participated in 2007 with St. Thomas More School. See his impressive accomplishments:

Future City Pittsburgh 2019
Distinguished Alumnus
Brandon D’Aloiso
Brandon D’Aloiso participated in the 2007 Future City Pittsburgh Competition with St. Thomas More School, supported by educator Gina Callahan and mentor Patricia Wattick.
Brandon received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Bioengineering in 2015 from the University of Pittsburgh and a Cardiovascular Perfusion Certificate from UPMC in 2017.
As an undergraduate researcher at Pitt he worked on multiple artificial lung devices for treatment of COPD, ARDS and other lung problems which is where he learned about Perfusion.
Brandon has published articles about cardiopulmonary bypass and permeability of polymer fibers used in respiratory assist devices. He also has a patent for a Cannula Stabilization Device for ambulatory ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation).
He currently works as a perfusionist at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center – Presbyterian Hospital while pursuing a Master’s degree (M.S.) in Bioengineering at Pitt. Additionally, he serves as a co-director of a comprehensive ECMO training course for physicians to learn about this complex procedure.
Brandon Reflects on his Future City Experience:
“Future City was definitely a long time ago for me, but it feels like yesterday. Back in those days I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up, but going through the experience helped me to realize something in the engineering/problem solving field was for me. Working and presenting our project to engineers was a great experience and really allowed me to learn about the field. While I took a turn and ended up doing more medical engineering, Future City allowed me to learn what engineering was and practice some of those early skills that would later serve me in school and work. Even teamwork was something we learned in the building and development of our city. Overall it was a great experience with some of my best friends until this day.”
Student Outreach Event
ESWP 1st Vice-President Dave Borneman, and Rucha Shah of Arcadis participated as judges in the “Sea, Air & Land Challenge” event at Seneca Valley High School on April 25, 2019, where Innovation and teamwork were keys at this robotics and engineering competition. Dave and Rucha volunteered as part of ESWP’s Student Outreach Initiative.
