The IBC annually recognizes individuals and projects of distinction.

The medals are named in honor of the distinguished engineers who have had a significant impact on the bridge engineering profession worldwide. Nominations are due the second week of January and presented at the Awards Dinner during the conference.

Project Medals: Award nominations must be “recent” projects, defined as within two years of the Awards ceremony. For example, for the 2026 Award, projects should be completed between June 2024 and June 2026.

George S. Richardson Medal - For a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering. Fields of endeavor may include design, construction, research or education.

Gustav Lindenthal Medal - For a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering demonstrating, as appropriate, technical and material innovation, aesthetic merit, harmony with the environment or successful community participation.

Eugene C. Figg Jr. Medal - For a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering that, through vision and innovation, provides an icon to the community for which it was designed.

Arthur G. Hayden Medal - For a single recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering demonstrating innovation in special use bridges such as pedestrian, people-mover, or non-traditional structures.

Abba G. Lichtenstein Medal - For a recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering demonstrating artistic merit and innovation in the restoration and rehabilitation of bridges of historic or engineering significance.

Theodore Cooper Medal - For a recent outstanding achievement in heavy and or light rail bridge engineering demonstrating innovation in the design of new rail bridges, the rehabilitation of rail bridges or the use of accelerated construction in rail bridge projects.

Please attach a brief description of the project, not to exceed a 1 page pdf (10 point font) executive summary, indicating the nature of the project and why you believe it best meets the criteria of the Medal in question followed by no more than 3 pages in support material. If you are submitting a project for consideration for multiple Medals, you may submit different descriptions for each Medal if you wish.
